New Chair of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Education, Sport and Children’s Services Committee Appointed

Cllr Paul Steele of the Barraigh, Bhatarsaigh, Eiriosgaigh agus Uibhist a Deas ward has been elected as Chair of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Education, Sport and Children's Services Committee.

Paul has extensive experience of working with young people through his role as Youth Champion and has served as Vice-Chair of the Comhairle's Communities and Housing Committee since 2017. He will now step down from that position.

Paul's election means that for the first time, a Director and Chair for the same Committee will be based in Uist.

He said: "I'm humbled that the Committee Members have put their faith in me, as a first term Councillor, to Chair this Committee. I'd like to thank them for that and I'll do my best to represent them well during my term.

I'm looking forward to working with the new Director of Education, Willie MacDonald and building on the foundations set by former Chair Angus McCormack and Director Bernard Chisholm.

The next few years will be challenging but it's a challenge I relish, and I'm committed to improving things for the children and young people of the Western Isles alongside my fellow Councillors and everyone in the Education Department."
